2023 Worlds - Event Finals Day One

The first reserve on Vault, Elsabeth Black of Canada comes in to replace the injured Joscelyn Roberson of the United States of America. Today sees the first day of Apparatus finals with some Olympic qualification spots (one per apparatus) also up for grabs. We start with the Men's Floor Final, which is just a formality with Philippines Gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo assured of the Olympic nominative place. Kazuki Minami - stuck first pass, low in the landing on the second pass, stepped forward on the third twisting pass, hopped back on the next pass, and slightly slid back on the final pass. Carlos Edriel Yulo - substantial hop forward on his final pass (roundoff 3.5) but such a steady routine for Carlos. Felix Dolci - solid first pass, big jump back on the second pass, lovely twister, some leg separation and form errors but he finishes solidly. Artem Dolgopyat - great routine but loss of stability in the final pass. Fred Richard - Great flairs sequence but under-rotates and falls on his final pass. Milad Karimi - low on the first landing, over-rotated on pike position, stylish flourish on over-balanced landing, and finishes strong. Harry Hepworth - Steps out of bounds on the second pass, and again. Otherwise a stellar performance. Daiki Hashimoto - power and amplitude to start but goes out of bounds on his opening tumbling line, recovers solidly. Israel's Artem Dolgopyat wins the Floor Exercise title with Japan's Kazuki Minami earning the silver and Kazakhstan's Milad Karimi winning the bronze!!

Oh wow. After the withdrawal of Jessica Gadirova and an appeal Leanne Wong came in to replace compatriot Roberson and Csenge Maria Bacskay replaced Gadirova along with Elsabeth Black. But it means a field of 9 now!! Lovely red leotard with diamantes for the Americans, Navy leotard with French coloring, and diamantes for Coline Devillard, White leotard with red patterning, and diamantes with mesh sleeves for Csenge Maria Bacskay. Simone Biles - Yurchenko Double Pike with Laurent Landi on the mat, falls on back after over-rotating; Cheng - such flight and solid landing! Coline Devillard - Hand down on the landing of her first vault where she was low in the landing; solid second vault - Full twisting Yurchenko. Leanne Wong - She's wearing her bow! GORGEOUS DTY small hop back! Podkapayeva - Step sideways. Csenge Maria Bacskay - Yurchenko 1.5 - step forward; tidy second vault. Shoko Miyata and Alexa Moreno's vaults I missed, unfortunately. Ellie Black - handspring front layout full twist - solid, hop forward; solid second vault of Tsuk 1.5!! YEO Seojeong - starts solidly! Gorgeous second vault! She became the first female gymnast from the Republic of Korea to win a medal on Vault!! Rebeca Andrade - WOAH! Beautiful Cheng to start and follows it up with solid DTY! Rebeca Andrade wins the Vault honours over American Simone Biles and YEO Seojeong of the Republic of Korea.

Unfortunately, I did not catch the rest of the finals. China's QIU Qiyuan won the Uneven Bars title. Algeria's Kaylia Nemour made history becoming not only the first Algerian to win a medal at a World Championships, but the first ever for the continent of Africa, as she took the silver. American Shilese Jones' higher execution score, saw her win the bronze. Ireland's Rhys McClenaghan won the Pommel Horse title over American Khoi Young, with Jordan's Ahmad Abu Al Soud winning the bronze. China's LIU Yang won the Still Rings title over Greece's Eleftherios Petrounias and compatriot YOU Hao.
